We are all aware of the fact that sitting on the computer for more than few hours is bad for our back. But, you probably don’t know that there are much more serious consequences coming as a result of this engagement. Despite damaging the back and spine, working on the computer until late hours can cause heart disease, some types of cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes, slow blood circulation and high cholesterol. This issue affects 50-70% of all Americans.

The newest statistics reveals that, about 80% of Americans use the Internet every day, and there is at least one computer in 90% of households. Researchers came up with the data that the number of Internet users increases by approximately 10 million every year.

Doctors say that the number of people experiencing back pain has been constantly increasing. About 40% of their patients face this very common problem due to improper sitting and spending too much time on the computer.

Many people seek medical help, but the majority of them has a job where working on the computer is compulsory for 8 or more hours every day. Children under 18 years old are especially concerned by this problem, who unfortunately, start to develop serious spinal deformities like kyphosis and scoliosis. Also 5 year old children spend almost the entire day on watching cartoons or playing computer games. This situation can severely harm their proper physical growth and development.

Experts on this topic also explain that if sitting in front of your computer exceeds 2 hours each day, the risk of harming your joints, spine, and neck is tremendously higher. Many people develop chronic pain taking medications for their entire lives and have difficulties putting up with the pain.

Important notes:

– Children younger than 12 years old should limit their long hours in front of the TV or the computer to less than two hours a day.

– If you feel muscle pain, don’t ignore it. It is an indicator that you should go for a walk or do some exercises.
