We often experience coughing and difficulties in breathing as a result of an obstruction in the throat or nasal passage. These problems usually happen because of increased thick substance secreted by the mucous membrane known as phlegm in the lungs.
Phlegm is responsible for fighting infections such as severe colds. When phlegm accumulates in the chest and throat, the body uses coughing to expel it. On the other hand, excess accumulation of phlegm in the lungs due to the flu, cold, viral or bacterial infections can cause big problems.
Excess accumulation of phlegm in the lungs may result in difficulty breathing, persistent cough, runny nose, weakness, and fever. It may block the bronchial tubes and cause much bigger problems, which are hard to treat with conventional medications. But don’t worry, there are many natural remedies which can reduce the amount of phlegm and treat respiratory infections easily and efficiently. Here are the best of them:
Honey and lemon
A mixture of lemon and honey can soothe your irritated respiratory tract. As you already know, honey and lemon are powerful antibacterial and antifungal agents. Lemon is rich in vitamin C which strengthens the immune system and reduces congestion effectively. Here’s how to prepare the mixture:
- 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon of organic honey
Take a clean bowl and mix the ingredient and that’s it. Consume this mixture up to three times a day to fight the congestion and relieve the infection.
Ginger has antibacterial properties. The root can soothe your throat and chest congestion by drying out the phlegm and stimulating its elimination. To treat respiratory infection consume 3-4 slices of ginger every day, or just drink 2-3 cups of ginger tea. Here’s how to prepare the tea:
- 2 cups of water
- 6-7 slices of ginger
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- 1 teaspoon of black peppercorns
Pour the water into a clean pan and boil it. Add the peppercorns and ginger. Cover the pan and wait for one minute. After that lower the heat and simmer for 6 minutes. Take the pan off the heat and wait for it to cool down. Strain it and add the honey. Drink 2-3 cups of ginger tea every day and you will see the results very soon.
Apple cider vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar is one of the best natural antibacterial agents. It can prevent excess phlegm production in the body. Just drink a tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar with a glass of water every day.
Turmeric contains a compound that has powerful antibacterial properties known as curcumin. Use this spice to treat respiratory infections:
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric
- A glass of warm water
- ½ a teaspoon of salt
Take a glass of warm water and add the turmeric. Mix well. Now add the salt and mix it again. Gargle for a few minutes 3-4 times a day in order to reduce the amount of phlegm in your chest and fight respiratory infections. Gargling with salt water is also very helpful. Warm water soothes the throat, and salt destroys the bacteria.
Steaming is one of the best ways of reducing chest congestion. Here’s how to prepare it:
- ½ a teaspoon of thyme
- 4-5 cups of boiling water
- ½ a teaspoon of dry rosemary
Boil the water and add the rosemary and the thyme. Lean over it with a towel over your head and inhale the vapor. Repeat this 3-4 times a day.
To prevent excess phlegm in your lungs, you should stop consuming cold drinks and cold foods and you should blow your nose regularly. If you are a smoker, you should also quit smoking. To control the production of mucus in your body, avoid exposure to chemicals which irritate your lungs, nose, and throat and use a humidifier in your home. If you notice phlegm in your throat, instead of swallowing it, gargle some warm water and salt and spit it out. Consume spicy foods such as peppers and garlic can help.
