Scientists have come up with a revolutionary discovery about an organ in the human body that hasn’t been known until this moment. You have to admit that this news took you by surprise.
The name of the newly discovered organ is mesentery, and it is part of the digestive system. So far, it has been thought to consist of fragmented and disparate structures. Experts found that it is actually one continuous organ and gathered evidence to classify it as such. Their analysis was published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology.
J. Calvin Coffey, from the University Hospital Limerick in Ireland, is the author of this review and says that they can freely call mesentery a new organ in the human body.
The mesentery, explained in medical terms, is a double fold of the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdominal cavity, so connecting the intestine to the abdomen.
Scientists still cannot precisely explain the function of the mesentery and they need further research. However studying it thoroughly, can lead to new findings about its impact on abdominal diseases.
Coffey adds that it should be approached like every other organ and deserves full attention.
