The health of your mouth is beyond important. But, let’s be honest. Your dentist is right when he says that you’re not brushing your teeth how they should be. Actually all of us choose to brush the teeth from side to side or in a circular motion. The newest research has shown that a combination of the methods is the best one for preventing plague. Plague contains bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease.
How this plague builds up?
As stated by James from Canyon Rim Dental in Salt Lake City, UT, plague develops when foods that contain carbohydrates, sugars and starches, such as milk, raisins, soft drinks, cakes or candy are usually left on the teeth. If not removed by proper brushing and flossing, it can develop into tartar, which is hardened plague that attaches to the enamel on your teeth and below the gum line. Flossing is also very important, because the bristles on your toothbrush can’t get in between your teeth. Plus, this area is predisposed to developing plague and cavities, so make sure you floss once a day. So, practicing this tooth-plague method is more than necessary, if you want to protect your teeth and gums.
If not treated on time, plague can lead to the inflammatory disease, gingivitis, which is a risky factor of tooth loss or infection.
– Gums that bleed easily during brushing or flossing
– Swollen and sore gums
– If you notice a change in your gums’ color, from a healthy pink to dusky red
– Receding gums
– Bad breath
If it is not treated on time, gingivitis develops into periodontal disease, which is a chronic infectious condition. It affects the whole mouth and it can be a serious threat to your health. To be precise, it can be a potential risk of occurrence of dangerous diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
Proper brushing of your teeth:
Step 1: You should start this process by holding the toothbrush sideways against your teeth with some of the bristles touching your gums.
Step 2: Roll or flick the brush, in a way that the bristles move out from under the gum toward the biting edge of the tooth.
Step 3: Do 3-4 circles of this on each tooth.
Step 4: As you will move from one tooth to the other, make sure you overlap a little bit onto the tooth you’ve just finished cleaning.
Step 5: Go over for each tooth.
Step 6: And finally, move up and down onto each tooth to clean the inside of your mouth.
This method is known as the Modified Bass Method. It is proven to be 3 times more effective than the usual way of teeth brushing.
As all dentists recommend you are supposed to brush your teeth twice a day, the first time when you wake up and the second time before going to sleep. But, keep in mind that you shouldn’t brush too hard, because you can damage your gums and cause them to recede.
Therefore, being sensitive as they are, you should be very careful no damaging your gums. To do that, the best way is to hold your toothbrush as if you are holding a pen. It is also very important to buy yourself an extra-soft bristle brush and clean your teeth for at least two minutes.
To get a thorough clean, brush your teeth after you have done the flossing. Don’t forget to brush your tongue as well. Rinse with water in order to remove as much as bad bacteria as possible.
So start practicing this technique to prevent many potential dental problems. And remember, the health of your teeth and gums begins with their proper cleaning.
